Welcome to NYAKA Volunteer & Visitor Guide
Nyaka AIDS School started in 2001 offers education to AIDS orphans and needy children
in Kambuga Kanungu District in South Western Uganda. Nyaka is a primary school for
needy AIDS orphans. The school focuses on children who have not been attending
school, due to a lack of school fees and other social problems. Nyaka School is helping
to mitigate the impacts of an illiterate society and provide these children with a future.

When You Arrive in Uganda
BIC RESOURCES Ltd will continue to offer travel services to Nyaka Visitors
and volunteers. BIC Resources is a travel agency that will handle your travel
arrangements for your placement at Nyaka School.
Samuel Mugisha, the founder and Director of BIC Resources will be your travel
coordinator.

Airport Pick Up
There is only one airport to fly into called Entebbe International Airport, which
is 45 minutes away from the capital city of Kampala. You will be met at the
Airport by BIC Tours & Travel designated staff for your trip. You will be helped
to transfer to Kampala City and Check in at Hotel/Guest house that will have
been booked. This Airport Transfer will cost about $30 car and fuel inclusive.

Most times Samuel Mugisha, will be you Travel Coordinator and will guide you
through orientation of your Nyaka Volunteer Trip or shot stay. You will also
meet with other Nyaka Volunteers based in Kampala. In case you are a bigger
group, a joint welcome/orientation event may be organized where the Uganda
based Staff Volunteer will answer all you questions concerns you may have at
this time before you proceed to Nyaka School.

Nyaka is located in Kanungu District, about 600km Southwestern part of
Uganda. The drive takes about 7-8hours on a tarmac road.
Nyaka are
located in Kambuga sub –county, Nyakagyezi Parish
.  If you travel by
Bus you will ask the Bus Conductor to get off from
Kambuga Hospital
Stage.
You will ask any body about Nyaka school and they will direct you. For
more information check
http://www.kanungu.go.ug/index.htm

Transport
BIC will arrange your transport to Kampala. Depending on your budget, BIC
will recommend and arrange the best transport option for you. Nyaka School
is accessible by the Kampala-Kihiihi road by bus. We recommend the first time
that you travel with a local guide if it is your first time to be in Uganda. This
bus trip will cost you about $20 if you travel alone and $60 if you travel with a
local guide who will need to return to Kampala.  We can also try to coordinate
times with others arriving which in that case would make it easy to pick you
and others up at the same time.  Sometimes this coordination is possible and
sometimes not.  But never fear, all will work out.

Note: The Bus trip can be a bit intimidating first time as there are delays of
departure, a lot of stopovers, a bit crowded, etc with limited comfort. But
imagine the backpacker style then the bus trip will be fun for you especially
with a local guide.

If you are not budget constraint we recommend that you take a hired car with
a driver. The car rental option is also advisable when you are traveling to
Nyaka for a few days or when combining the trip with lots of safari game
viewing activities. The car rental cost in Uganda is unfortunately considerably
on a higher side in the region so the Fuel (Gas) cost. However the comfort of
travel through the beautiful vast plains, green hills and valleys with the liberty
to stop at any spot to have a close look, take a leisurely drive in the nearby
park is work the car rental cost. Car rental cost will be about $125 per day
with a driver (fuel/gas paid separately) for a standard 4WD.

Money Issues
Most of the place payments will be made in Uganda Shillings. Some places you
may pay in USD. You will need to change some of your USD dollars into
Uganda shillings. The foreign exchange market in Uganda is liberalized with
many Forex bureaus competing with banks to offer better rates. There can be
a big shift in a week. BIC tour guide will help you to identify the exchange
point that gives the best rate.

NOTE:
  1. There is a culture of bargaining in Uganda. Also consult your tour guide
to check for Common Prices, as some places may want to charge a
    relatively higher price to foreigners.
  2. Before you get used to USD-Uganda shilling exchange rates (quick
calculations) utilize the services of your guide in your basic shopping in
Uganda. You will save time and a few dollars.

Foreign Currency:  USD is the most widely accepted foreign currency in
Uganda. Bring with you USD which can easily be exchanged at a Forex
Bureau. Older notes produced below year 2000 as well as USD notes of $1,
$5, & $10 and $20 (at some Forex Bureau) attract lower rates. Bring crisp
new undamaged  $100 bills with “Big Ben” on them.  These bring the best
exchange rate.  They are no longer accepting older bills for exchange, so your
$100 bills must be 2000 series or newer (printed in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003,
etc.).
Euros are also widely accepted at many Forex Bureau.

Travellers Cheques: can be used at some locations but are charged high
rates. We recommend that you do not bring Travelers Checks.  They are really
hard to cash even in Kampala and will cost you a lot to cash them.

Credit Cards: Using any kind of credit or debit card is by chance. A VISA
card can be used at Barclays Bank locations to withdraw USD cash at a
nominal charge.
MasterCard & AMEX can also be used at some
establishments in Kampala & up market lodges in National parks.

Telephone & E-mail Communication
Telephone: We recommend that you bring with you a mobile phone set if you
are to stay for more than three months. We will recommend that best
telephone service provider (MTN http://www.mtn.co.ug/personal/vas.htm, UTL
http://www.utl.co.ug/utl.php?t=personal&i=1) which allows mobile phone e-
mail or SMS.

Alternatively, BIC will provide a mobile PHONE to use during your short stay in
Kampala +256-71-305045 at a small rental fee & buy your own international
calling card. You will be able to keep in touch with your family & friends. You
keep in touch with your (important) business during stay in Uganda and at
Nyaka.

If you don’t fancy mobile phones, Nyaka School will have a fixed phone by Mid
2006 where you can receive calls.

E-mail communication: There are various Internet cafes in Kampala. BIC will
arrange and book Internet café where you can send check & send and e-mails
while in Kampala. When you travel to Nyaka, in extreme need to check you
email you will need to travel about 50-80kms to the nearest Town with
Internet connection. A Tele-centre has been opened at Bwindi Gorilla National
Park, which is about 30kms from Nyaka School, this could also be the option.

Accommodation
Nyaka Guest House: Nyaka School is building a guesthouse where we will
charge a small fee $10 a day for house keeping and food if you want it
prepared. The guesthouse will have a general kitchen where you may need to
cook a private meal.

Home Stay: We recommend home stay only a few weeks of your stay. As
long as the guest House will be available, we recommend that volunteers stay
at the school. If you are passionate about staying with a local family let us
know so we can arrange a host family for you. During orientation, you will
inform the organizers how long you would want to stay with a Host Family
stating clearly your EXPECTATIONS. If your expectations meet the
requirements of the host families available you will be informed of the host
family selected for you and how long you will stay with host Family.
Lodging & Camping: Depending on your group, duration of stay, you may
choose to do a camping experience at Nyaka School. Bring with you camping
equipments. Some of the camping equipments can be bought cheaply in
Kampala.

Food & Drinks
Uganda has a variety of food and fruits. Traditional foods include banana, Irish
potato. There are lots of fresh vegetables and fruits. We are sure you will get
used to Ugandan fresh foods, vegetables and fruits.
NOTE: The food tends to be of the unprocessed kind, so one may not really
find much tinned stuff!
See what Volunteers of Nyaka
are doing for Nyaka

Instead of building a school, we decided
that we would support an already
existing one. We picked the Nyaka AIDS
Orphans School, a school for AIDS
orphans in Nyakagyezi, Uganda, and we
started a pen pal correspondence
between the girls in Girls for Girls and the
students at Nyaka....

Girls for Girls held a really successful
fundraiser in support of the Nyaka AIDS
Orphans School. We raised over four
thousand dollars -- far exceeding our
goal for the night. Next year, the
students at the Nyaka AIDS Orphans
School will be playing basketball on a
court that we built. They will be reading
books that we've bought and using
mathematical sets that we've provided.
